How important is effective onboarding?

For many companies, recruiting international apprentices has long since become a key part of securing a skilled workforce. However, true success does not begin when the contract is signed, but only upon arrival in Germany.
For young people starting their apprenticeship in a new country, almost everything changes within a matter of days. They get to know a new training company, have to find their feet in unfamiliar surroundings, make new contacts and, at the same time, come to terms with linguistic and cultural differences. This can be challenging, which is precisely why effective onboarding plays a crucial role.
More than just the first day at work
Onboarding is often associated with a brief welcome or an introduction to the company. In practice, however, it involves much more. Good onboarding supports new apprentices during their first few days and weeks and helps them settle in step by step.
The focus is not solely on technical content. Topics such as finding your way around day-to-day life, dealing with public authorities, getting to know new structures and building social connections are also key components of a successful start.
Those who feel welcome and supported from the outset gain confidence more quickly and are better able to concentrate on their training.
Why companies benefit from this
A structured induction process brings benefits not only for trainees, but also for companies. New employees settle into their roles more quickly, understand work processes sooner and develop a stronger sense of loyalty to their training company.
At the same time, potential challenges can be identified at an early stage and resolved collaboratively. This facilitates integration, strengthens teamwork and lays the foundations for a successful apprenticeship. This is a particularly important factor for the success of international young professionals. After all, securing a sustainable supply of skilled workers does not end with successful recruitment; it begins with a smooth induction.
What does effective onboarding look like?
Successful onboarding combines technical, organisational and social aspects. In addition to an introduction to the company, this includes, for example, information on living and working in Germany, support with organisational matters, joint activities and designated points of contact for questions and challenges.
Above all, it is important that new trainees do not feel left to their own devices. Guidance, trust and personal support lay the foundations for a successful start.
Onboarding at Why not Logistics
At Why not Logistics, we see onboarding as a key part of the overall integration process. That is why we organise a multi-day onboarding week for our international trainees every year. During this time, the young people not only get to know their fellow trainees, trainers and contact persons. They also receive important information about living and working in Germany, take part in workshops, complete a first-aid course and explore many practical aspects of everyday life.
Furthermore, the focus is on intercultural exchange, joint activities and getting to know one another personally. This helps to foster an initial sense of community even before they start at their respective training locations.

Our conclusion
Effective onboarding is far more than just an organisational task. It provides guidance, builds trust and makes it easier to settle into a completely new phase of life. Anyone wishing to successfully integrate international trainees should therefore invest not only in recruitment, but also in the period that follows. After all, a successful apprenticeship begins with a successful start.
